Martin Miller was a participant in the Internship Program during the fall of 2017. He served as the intern for Tails Humane Society. He has stayed in DeKalb County and works for Kishwaukee Family YMCA. Read more below as we catch up with Martin.
Q: What was the biggest benefit and/or the coolest part of your internship experience?
Martin: The biggest benefit of the internship is gaining real-life experience working in the nonprofit sector. Also being able to do a professional interview and have feedback from the interviewer was a great experience that I believe ultimately helped me land my first job! Another benefit is that an internship gives you professional work experience to add to your resume, such as projects and events that you worked on.
Q: In your opinion, why should students pursue internship opportunities?
Martin: Students should pursue internship opportunities to gain real-life experience and this is a great way to test the waters to make sure that this field is right for you. Interning also allows the student to perfect their communication and leadership skills.
Q: What are you up to now?
Martin: I am currently the Member Experience Director at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA. In this role I am responsible for leading the membership staff, member experience retention, and new member joins. I am also the supervisor for our Kid Zone, where we provide child care for parents while they participate in a class, program or utilize different areas of the Y.
Q: Please share any additional comments you have about your internship experience.
Martin: Thank you to the Roberts Family Foundation for allowing me and so many others the opportunity to be part of this program. Your generosity is changing the lives of so many NIU students. Again, thank you for your support!
