Intern Spotlight – AJ Evon
September 25, 2026A: I was a Program Support Intern for the Institute. I attended the Student Legislative Seminar program that the Institute facilitates towards the end of April. Afterwards, I was able to meet with new interns and work together to research other potential speaking engagement events for the Institute for Carolyn Zasada. I also researched potential grants for a Legislative Seminar trip for next spring. Lastly, before finishing Spring semester at NIU, I was able to get some speaking opportunities for the Director, Carolyn, at the Political Science Honors Society, and I also spoke in all my courses to express the programs we offered at the Institute.
A: This internship has given me a much better understanding of how nonprofits operate behind the scenes. I’ve gained experience in research, community outreach, event planning, and professional communication. One of the highlights was traveling to Washington, D.C. to help support the Student Legislative Seminar and seeing firsthand the impact the program has on students. I’ve also become more confident working with professionals, organizing meetings, and building relationships with schools and community partners. Overall, the experience has strengthened my interest in public service and has given me skills that I know will help me in law school and my future career.
A: I think every student should complete an internship before graduating because it gives you experience that you just can’t get in a classroom. It helps you build professional skills, make connections, and figure out what type of work you enjoy. It also makes you more confident and gives you real examples to talk about during interviews. For me, this internship confirmed that I want to continue working in public service and eventually pursue a career in law.
A: Thank you for making this internship opportunity possible. Your support allowed me to gain hands-on experience, develop valuable professional skills, and work on projects that make a real difference in communities. I truly appreciate the opportunity to learn from such a dedicated organization, and I know this experience will have a lasting impact on my future. Thank you for investing in students like me.
