In this workshop, we will reflect on the role of arguments in a healthy democracy and will introduce the three dimensions and five principles of a Better Argument. These provide the foundation for productive and meaningful conversations, despite disagreement.

This workshop features:

• A proven framework for healthy dialogue and productive disagreement.
• Concrete tips for putting Better Arguments principles into practice.
• Reflections about the opportunities and challenges related to bridging our divides.
• Content relating Better Arguments principles to roles in the community and organizational leadership.
• Zoom meeting format with multiple breakouts scheduled for small group discussion.

Presenter: ​Seth Henderson is the Program Manager | Allstate Fellow for the Citizenship and American Identity Program. He is also the Co-Chair of the Task Force on Equity and Inclusion at the Aspen Institute. He supports the Better Arguments Project, a new national civic initiative created to help bridge ideological divides. He is a McNair Scholar and former White House intern for President Barack Obama. He also served as a research assistant to Dr. Jennifer L. Hochschild, a Henry LaBarre Jayne Professor of Government and Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. Prior to joining the Aspen Institute, Seth was the first employee of President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (MBKA). President Obama established My Brother’s Keeper Initiative (MBK) in 2014 to address persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young men of color and to ensure all youth can reach their full potential. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Los Angeles based non-profit In A Perfect World, which empowers the next generation by supporting access to education, mentoring, and artistic expression for under-served youth around the world. Seth is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University where he majored in political science and criminal justice. Most recently, he has completed certifications in Nonprofit Executive Management from Georgetown University and Diversity & Inclusion from Cornell University. He is currently completing a Project Management certificate from Harvard University and participating in the McKinsey & Company Black Leadership Academy Management Accelerator.
