Jalissa Murray is a Senior at NIU who recently completed her internship with Safe Passage as part of the Internship Program in Fall 2020. Jalissa is a Nonprofit & NGO Studies major.

Q: What project(s) you are working on as an intern?

Jalissa: I served as the Development Assistant- I worked on putting several fundraisers together for the dine to donate fundraising series. I also worked with several other events like the Golf Outing, Swept Under the Rug, and Crop Walk.

Q: What is the biggest benefit and/or the coolest part of your internship experience?

Jalissa: The biggest benefit of being a part of this organization is that they promote from within. After just being here for a month, I received and accepted a job offer to be a caseworker in the shelter.

Q: In your opinion, why should students pursue internship opportunities?

Jalissa: I’ve gotten a chance to understand how grants and fundraisers work logistically. As well as all the work that goes into building a relationship with existing donors and creating new relationships with donors.

Q: Please share any additional comments you have about your internship experience.

Jalissa: Thank you so much to the Roberts Family Foundation for your support and allowing students like me the opportunity to get knowledge and experience in my career field. As well as allowing me to establish new skills that set me apart in my field.

The Internship Program is a collaboration between the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership, the Center for Nonprofit Studies, and Career Services at Northern Illinois University, supported by the Douglas C. and Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation.
