Daniele Leonard is an intern at Ellwood House Museum as part of the Internship Program this spring semester. Daniele is a General Studies major with a Nonprofit & NGO Studies certificate.

Q: What project(s) you are working on as an intern?

Daniele: I am a Research and Exhibit Design Intern at Ellwood House Museum investigating the lives of servants who worked for the Ellwood Family. Uncovering more about the individual servants’ role in the Ellwood mansion and community organizations has been fascinating, there are so many ways to connect with their stories! DeKalb has a rich history of immigration, community, and civic involvement that impacts our daily experiences.

Q: What is the biggest benefit and/or the best part of your internship experience?

Daniele: The Ellwood mansion is beautiful, the level of craftsmanship is exquisite! I’ve also enjoyed examining old photographs and seeing how individuals progressed through the years. Newspapers and local organizations have been helpful in documenting individual journeys of family life and community engagement – it’s clear how much the DeKalb community has treasured ongoing education and social responsibility. The internship has given me a greater appreciation for the foundation previous generations lay in preparation of a brighter future.

Q: In your opinion, why should students pursue internship opportunities?

Daniele: Internships offer students a unique opportunity to apply their knowledge and channel their ambition to increase community impact through local organizations. It is one thing to read about great nonprofits, another to work with dedicated individuals contributing to them.

Q: Please share any additional comments you have about your internship experience.

Daniele: I am grateful for the Roberts Family Foundation for their generous support, this has been an incredible and engaging opportunity!

The Internship Program is a collaboration between the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership, the Center for Nonprofit Studies, and Career Services at Northern Illinois University, supported by the Douglas C. and Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation.
